About the Star Flicks contest
Star Flicks
is brought to you by Star Media Group Berhad, and is endorsed by the Education Ministry.
For the Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) contest this year, which is open to secondary school students (Forms One to Six), we are taking on an aspect that plays a big part in teenagers’ lives – movies.
Movies serve a multitude of purposes. They not only provide entertainment and relaxation, but also draw our attention to important issues such as history, nature and family. They create awareness, invoke imagination, evoke emotions and inspire us to action.
The focus of the Star Flicks contest, however, is not on producing movies or performances worthy of the silver screen. Instead, we want you to take a closer look at real-life stories that make the headlines in The Star newspapers, and brainstorm how you can convey the central themes and issues in the stories through a compelling movie poster.
You must choose one of the following themes to craft your movie poster:
From the illegal trading of endangered wildlife species to the proliferation of fake news, there is no shortage of real-life issues – either domestic or global – that you can highlight in your movie poster.
As we head towards a more inclusive future, it is all the more important for us to keep abreast of current affairs and social issues. By shining the spotlight on what’s making news, we hope a greater number of people will become better-informed and empathetic citizens of the nation and the world.
The movie poster
So, what is a movie poster? A familiar feature of the cityscape, it is a form of advertisement that attracts attention and delivers a message. Like words and films, movie posters have just as much power to tell a story, project an emotion and capture an event.
This contest is your chance to put yourself in the shoes of graphic designers and really think about how you can impact others through visual representations. It is also your chance to create awareness about issues you feel strongly about. So, give us your best shot!
In groups of four, produce a movie poster that conveys an issue highlighted in an article from The Star newspaper published in the year 2018. This means coming up with a powerful graphic, complete with a catchy movie title and tagline. Then, in about 150 words, tell us about the plot summary of your movie and explain the message you wish to convey through your movie poster.
The best part is, you and your friends stand a chance to win fantastic prizes. So, get your creative juices flowing and unleash your talent.
At the Grand Finals
The selected finalists will be required to carry out a five-minute PowerPoint presentation each, explaining why the issue and the message conveyed through their movie posters are important for the nation, in addition to answering questions posed by a panel of judges.
