Who can participate? |
| Mag Inc 2009 is open to all primary 4 to 6 and secondary school students in Malaysia. Hence, three levels – Primary (P), Lower Secondary (LS) and Upper Secondary (US).
Participation is through schools only. |
How and when to register? |
Online registration at http://contests.thestar.com.my/nie starts on Apr 1 and ends on Apr 30.
Each school must appoint a Contest Coordinator (teacher-in-charge) who coordinates the contest in school. |
What are participants required to do? |
Under the supervision of their English language teacher, students work in teams of four/five to produce a 3-page mini magazine of their own title that investigates, probes and addresses an issue of teen angst.
Teams may focus on an issue/topic listed in the following (or a teenage angst issue of their choice):
1. Dealing with a jealous friend
2. Bullying
3. My parents, my friends?
4. Cliques in school
5. Favouritism at home and at school
6. Handling examination pressure
7. Internet addiction
8. Substance abuse
9. Teen dating versus studying
10. Smoking
11. Self-harming behaviours
12. Teens and body image
13. Teen suicide
14. Runaway teens
Projection of the chosen issue/topic in the mini magazine must be in the form of a feature article. Include three other elements which can be found in a magazine (eg.interviews, short stories, poems, advice columns/agony aunt pages, comic strips, anecdotes, advertisements, polls, surveys). |
Qualification for prizes |
For each team member to qualify for a personal pan pizza voucher from Pizza Hut, the team must produce a 3-page mini magazine that is designed on the original template published in the Star-NiE pullouts on Apr 1 and Apr 22.
For each team member to qualify for a regular pan pizza voucher from Pizza Hut, each team must either:
• Produce two 3-page mini magazines (of different topics)
OR
• (In addition to one 3-page mini magazine) produce a 3-minute video clip in the form of an advertisement, a PSA or a message tackling the issue/topic featured in the mini magazine. The clip must then be downloaded into a Compact Disc (with another original Form C attached) and submitted together with the mini magazine. |

Pizza Hut vouchers |
The contest coordinator from each participating school will receive a coordinator level prize of a RM50 Pizza Hut voucher.
Teachers stand a chance to win one or three Pizza Hut regular pan pizza voucher(s).
The list of teams and teachers receiving their vouchers will be published on 19 July in StarEducation.
The Pizza Hut vouchers for the participating students and teachers will be sent to the schools in August. |

Grand prize finalists |
There are a mini magazine category and a video clip category for the Grand Prize level.
The contest coordinator MUST NOMINATE ONE ENTRY for the mini magazine category and ONE 3-minute video clip for the Video Clip category for the relevant levels – primary, lower secondary and upper secondary.
Two finalist teams each will then be selected from the primary, lower secondary and upper secondary levels. These six finalists are to give a presentation on their mini magazine in English to a panel of judges in the grand prize level in September. |

| Submission of entries from schools to Star-NiE for judging must be done by June 20. |
